Starting something you haven't done before, like launching a business or beginning a new career, naturally means a lot of new things. That's when it helps to have someone with experience to take advice from. In every area of life there are always role models you can look to for guidance.
The usual way to get a mentor is to earn one. Mentorship is often rooted in a question of attitude, about responsibility and personal leadership.
The definition of a mentor can vary. Wikipedia writes that ”Mentorship means that a mentor takes responsibility for a mentee's personal development in one way or another, usually in connection with passing on some particular knowledge.”
Invest in your education
Your company almost certainly has books it recommends you read and audio material you can listen to. Some training may even be part of the support system. The question is whether you choose to invest time in studying that material. An even more important question is why a mentor or upline should invest time and commitment in someone who doesn't invest in themselves.
Then it's of course about taking action. People in motion are more fun to talk to. There are plenty of people out there who are good at talking, but inspiration without action is just entertainment. Do so many good things that they want to be your mentor. An upline is nearly always on the lookout for talent, for the right person seeking mentorship to guide, so by taking action you'll attract it.
You want to find a mentor who has mastered what you want to get better at. You don't ask your neighbour for expert tips on mountain climbing if she isn't a climber, even if she's watched a lot of YouTube clips. You can't learn to swim by reading a book.
“If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself.” , Jim Rohn
Don't expect to learn how to take the next step from people who haven't taken it, but if they've done what you want to do, then it's time to listen. If you want to become a Diamond, a President or whatever a top position is called in your company, you need to do what a person with that title has done.
Why go to the gym when you could lie on the sofa with a bag of cheese puffs. It depends on who you want to be, who you want to become, and you look for mentorship accordingly, from people who are good in different areas. If you want to lose a few kilos and someone who knows nutrition better than you tells you what to eat to get there, you have a choice. Follow the recipe or miss the goal. It isn't hard to understand that broccoli beats French fries. Often it's tough love that's needed. If you don't buy a gym membership, it's pretty hard to show your personal trainer that you're serious about training.
Find out what resources you need in terms of material and products to build your business. Ask your mentor what to read and listen to. If you intend to be the next success story and you're willing to pay the price, then congratulations are in order. Your time will come.
