Imagine if we hadn't had the leverage that comes from a network. Imagine if everyone was a competitor and we didn't get paid for working together. Let's look at how an entrepreneur would think if everything was about building a customer base without recruiting or training other people to bring in customers.
”We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace.” – Jim Rohn
If it really is about bringing value to the marketplace, then it might be time to go back to the absolute basics. The company needs a product the market wants and salespeople who can communicate that product out in the market. Often it's about informing or educating the market about a problem the product solves. Now think about what I wrote at the start.
How would an entrepreneur think if it was only about getting products out to the market?
If we look at different ways of earning money: Employee, Self employed, Business owner, Investor. There are surely more. The employee and the self employed trade time for money. If they want to earn more money, they have to settle for less time. If they want more time off, they have to survive on less money. There's always a shortage of something there.
Business owners or investors build systems to get leverage on their invested time or their invested capital. When an entrepreneur sees an opportunity to make money on a product with potential in the market, there's always a certain kind of question in the air. A few examples:
- How is it going to be sold?
- How do we scale this up?
- What are the margins?
- How do we get leverage on our investment?
- What percentage of the profit can we share with salespeople who can earn commission?
They understand from the very beginning that it's better to earn a lower percentage on many people's work than to do all the work yourself. In direct selling all of this is already in place and the business system is there. The first thing you focus on is customers, because if you don't get any real customers there won't be any money. You build up a customer portfolio and get paid for taking care of it.
All you then need to do to scale up is to learn the system. You don't want to miss out on the leverage every entrepreneur is after. If you teach 10 people how to get customers, you actually get paid on the productivity of 10 people. When you have hundreds of people in your network and thousands of customers in your team, there's nothing more profitable than focusing on continuing to build your empire.
